I saw this little boy today.  Three years old.  Small-framed child.  So sweet.  He was sitting on a couch sucking the two middle fingers on his left hand.  Wanted to photograph him right then.  That sweet innocent face.  So vulnerable and soft.

I wondered if his mom has these photos.  She may be seeing his finger-sucking with practical eyes.  Thinking $ signs of future orthodontic expenses.  I tend to be that practical thinker, too.

I hope she sees what I see – even just for a moment.  A small sweet innocent boy, so different from the man he will become and stay for the vast majority of his life.  I hope she thinks to photograph him now.  If braces are in his future, they are a temporary financial burden.

If she has this photograph, later she WILL look at these times differently.  She WILL be reminded of this small, sweet, dependent little boy who sucked his fingers for comfort.  She WILL think about how simple and safe it was to be his parent then.
